    “Dining With Diabetes” Program

 

If you have diabetes, selecting and preparing foods that are low in sugar, fat and sodium can be a real challenge.  The Escambia and Santa Rosa Extension Offices of the University of Florida, and Santa Rosa Medical Center will offer a series of cooking classes for people with diabetes and their family members or caretakers.  It will be held in Milton at the Santa Rosa County Auditorium, 4530 Jimmie’s Way (behind the Public Services Building near Hwy. 90 and Avalon Blvd.)  The course will be three consecutive Tuesday mornings: April 9th, 16th and 23rd.  Times are 9:00 am to 12:00 Noon.

The program will include food demonstrations and tasting, guest speakers on topics such as diabetes basics, nutritional needs, foot care, medications and monitoring, and the latest information on diabetes.  Class participants will get recipe booklets; watch cooking demonstrations, and taste foods made with less fat, sugar and salt.

Linda Bowman and Dorothy Lee, Family & Consumer Science Agents with the University of Florida Extension Service are coordinating the program.  Susan Giannakis, R.D., diabetes educator with Santa Rosa Medical Center will be teaching portions of the classes.  The cost of the program, which includes food and educational materials, is $15 per person or $20 per couple.  To register or for additional information you may call, mail or come by the Extension Office in Santa Rosa County at 6051 Old Bagdad Hwy.-Rm. 116, Milton, FL 32583 or call at 623-3868 or 939-1259, ext. 1360.  Checks should be made payable to: Santa Rosa Extension Advisory Fund.  Registration deadline is Friday, April 5th.
