Tips for Home Fire Safety

Install Smoke Detectors
Install smoke detectors on every level of your home, including the basement, as well as inside and outside each sleeping area. Test detectors every month, following the manufactures directions, and replace batteries once a year. Replace detectors that are more than 10 years old

Emergency Escape Window or Door
Every sleeping room should have a secondary egress directly to the outside such as a window or second door, incase the primary egress door is blocked. Security bars over escape windows should be operable from the inside.

Smoking Alerts
Smokers be very careful, careless smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths in North America. Never smoke in bed, soak butts with water before discarding.

Cooking Alerts
Never leave cooking unattended. Turn pot handles inward on the stove. If grease catches fire in a pan slide a lid over the pan to smother the flames and turn off the heat.

Electrical Safety
If an electrical appliance smokes or has an unusual smell, unplug it immediately. Do not overload electrical cords or run them under rugs.

Escaping from fire
During a fire, smoke and poisonous gas rise with heat. The cleaner air is near the floor.

Stop, Drop and Roll
If your clothes catch fire, don’t run. Stop where you are, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and roll over and over to smother the flames.
