At 9:58 a.m. Santa Rosa County Emergency Communication received a call regarding a tanker truck that overturned while travelling north on Avalon Boulevard. The truck is carrying Anhydrous ammonia. There is no confirmed leak at this time.

As a precautionary measure as the accident is cleared, I10 from the Scenic Highway exit (17) to the Bagdad exit (26) has been closed.  In addition, Avalon from Cyanamid to San Jose is closed. A precautionary shelter in place notice has also been issued for the half mile radius north of Avalon and I10, including Avalon Middle and Benny Russell Elementary.  Residents schools to stay inside, turn off air conditioners, close windows and bring pets inside.

A shelter has been opened by the American Red Cross at New Life Church Community Center located at 4115 Soundside drive in Gulf Breeze.

Anhydrous ammonia is in a gas form but becomes a liquid when exposed to air.  It is a severe inhalation hazard that can also cause blisters and burns to the skin.
