[ARCHIVED] May Events at Your Santa Rosa County Library

Holiday Closures
The library system will close on Monday, May 27 in observance of Memorial Day.
 
Military Appreciation Month
May is National Military Appreciation Month. Join the Santa Rosa County Library System in recognizing and showing appreciation for the contributions of the courageous men and women who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. Visit your local library and fill out a star to thank local service members for their service. The stars will be displayed in each library throughout the month.
 
Family Story Hour 
"Book a Trip" with Family Story Hour! Go on a journey to all seven continents. There will be stories, activities and more related to each destination on the trip. This month’s continent is Antarctica. Come each month to receive a stamp in the Family Story Hour passport. Family Story Hour will be presented during the following times this month:

  • 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 3 at the Milton Library
  • 4 p.m. on Monday, May 6 at the Navarre Library
  • 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14 at the Jay Library
  • 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21 at the Pace Library
  • 4 p.m. on Friday, May 31 at the Gulf Breeze Library

Preschool Storytime
Storytime programs are presented for preschool children ages three through five and include stories, finger plays and action rhymes. Caregivers must remain in the library during storytime; however, they cannot accompany children into the programs. Programs start promptly at the assigned times; latecomers are not admitted.

First timer? Visit the library to meet the storytime presenter, pick up a welcome packet, explore the children's area and enjoy a tour of the library.
 
Storytime will be presented during the following times through May 3:

  • 11 – 11:30 a.m. on Mondays at the Jay Library
  • 11 – 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays at the Navarre & Milton Libraries
  • 11 – 11:30 a.m. on Fridays at the Gulf Breeze & Pace Libraries

Toddler Time
Toddler Time is a program for children ages 18 to 36 months who attend with a caregiver.  One child and one adult register together for songs, stories, rhymes and other fun activities. This 20-minute program lasts six weeks.
 
Toddler Time requires registration; space is limited. It is not a drop-in program. Details are available at the participating libraries. For questions, call Youth Services Coordinator Angela Evans at 981-4066.
 
Toddler Time will be presented during the following times through May 3:

  • 11 – 11:20 a.m. on Wednesdays at the Milton, Navarre, and Pace Libraries

Book Chat – Pace Library – 4750 Pace Patriot Blvd.
May 1, 4 p.m.  
One of the next best things to reading a good book is chatting about it. Join the conversation at the Pace Library on the first Wednesday of every month at 4 p.m. This month’s selection is “City of Grudges” by Rick Outzen. Registration is required.
 
The Illustriates Graphic Novel Book Club – Navarre Library - 8484 James M. Harvell Rd.
May 1, 4 p.m.
Sixth through 12th graders can join fellow graphic novel enthusiasts to discuss the book of the month. Members can suggest reading ideas, interests, and discuss the world of the graphic novel. This month’s selection is “Lumberjanes: Beware the Kitten Holy” by Noelle Stevenson. Registration is required.
 
FONL Spring Book Sale – Navarre Library – 8484 James M. Harvell Rd.
May 3, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and May 4, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
The Friends of the Navarre Library will hold a Spring Book Sale on Friday, May 3, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and on Saturday, May 4, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. A variety of books will be available. Support the local Friends group.
 
STEAM Makerspace – Gulf Breeze Library - 1060 Shoreline Dr.
May 4 and 11, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
May 6, 13, and 20, 2 p.m. – 5p.m.
Come join the maker's space at the Gulf Breeze Libary. Persons interested in drafting, robotics, Arduino, knitting, painting or any kind of hobby have access to the library meeting room. Registration is required.
 
Reading with Gabby– Pace Library – 4750 Pace Patriot Blvd.
May 4, 10 a.m.
Visit the library to read with Gabby the therapy dog! Space is limited; registration is required.

May 4, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
May the 4th Be with You at a Star Wars STEAM program. There will be robotics and programming activities. This program is open to kids ages seven and up; see a staff member for more information.
 
Star Wars STEAM – Milton Library – 5541 Alabama St.
May 4, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
May the 4th Be with You at the Star Wars STEAM building program. There will be a variety of Star Wars-themed building sets suitable for a variety of ages and skill levels. This program is open to all school-aged kids (K-12th grade).
 
Refreshing Reads Book Club – Jay Library - 5259 Booker Ln.
May 7, 3 p.m.
Enjoy an uplifting book club where one can talk about books in a spirit of fun and sharing.This month's selection is “Send Down the Rain” by Charles Martin. Registration is required.
 
FOML Spring Book Sale – Milton Library – 5541 Alabama St.
May 10, 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and May 11, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
The Friends of the Milton Library will hold a Spring Book Sale on Friday, May 10, 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and on Saturday, May 11, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. A variety of books will be available. Support the local Friends group.

Enjoy playing games? Join the Milton Library for game day. Bring games from home or play those provided. There will also be an on-going Dungeons & Dragons campaign. This event is open to all ages and game groups are welcome.

Learn the basics of how to crochet! Visit the Jay Library to sign up and get a supply list. Supplies should cost less than $5.

The non-fiction book club meets on the second Tuesday of every other month for a brown bag lunch and book discussion. This month’s selection is “Never Caught” by Erica Armstrong Dunbar. Registration is required.

Sixth through 10th graders are invited to share ideas about the book of the month. The Inklings Book Club meets the second Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m. at the Milton Library.This month’s selection is “Star Wars Lost Stars” by Claudia Gray. Registration is required.

Third Thursdays with a County Master Gardener – Navarre Library – 8484 James M. Harvell Rd.

The county master gardeners will present a monthly series on a variety of interesting topics with solutions for gardening life. This month’s topic, “Basic Gardening Principles,” will be presented by Jenny Weber.

The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Services presents “Organic Pesticide Options for the Homeowner” by Sam Greendorfer, Florida master gardener, at the Gulf Breeze Library.
 
Family Movie Mondays – Navarre Library - 8484 James M. Harvell Rd.
May 20, 3:30 p.m.
Family movies will be shown the third Monday of every month at 3:30 p.m. There will be a break in June and July. This month’s movie is “Charlotte’s Web” (rated G) based on E.B. White’s novel. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Navarre Library.

AniManga Club – Gulf Breeze Library - 1060 Shoreline Dr.

Visit the Gulf Breeze Library on the third Tuesday of each month to learn and share graphic art skills in a fun environment. The AniManga Club is dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of animation, cartooning, and related arts. The club is open to youth ages 11 – 17.

Tweens and teens ages 10-17 who are interested in robotics, coding, Arduino, virtual reality, and all things tech-related are invited to a robotics and tech club. Meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month. Beginners through expert level welcome!

Visit the Navarre Library for a new book club. Meetings are on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m. Those interested may suggest books to the library – fiction and non-fiction titles are welcome!
 
Bibliobabblers Teen Book Club - Gulf Breeze Library - 1060 Shoreline Dr.
May 28, 6 p.m.

Ninth through 12th graders who are 14-18 years old can discuss the read-of-the-month with friends at the Gulf Breeze Library. Bibliobabblers meets at 6 p.m. on the last Tuesday of every month. This month we will be reading “The Martian Chronicles” by Ray Bradbury.
 
Register for Summer Reading
May 28
Explore space with “A Universe of Stories” this summer. Online registration begins May 28 for all children preschool age to those who have completed the 5th grade. After registering, pick up a reading calendar at the local library or print one from the website. Read for 15 minutes per day between June 3 and July 19 for great prizes! Minutes read by parents to preschoolers may be counted. Bring completed reading logs to the local library's last program or to the local library through July 31 to claim prizes.
