Hurricane Delta update #2

Tues., Oct. 6 - Updates are highlighted

Santa Rosa County Emergency Management officials continues to closely monitor Hurricane Delta. While potential impacts are still too early to determine, residents are reminded to follow the National Weather Service and local media outlets for the most recent weather updates.

Prepping Your Home

  • Residents are encouraged to secure homes as much as possible prior to any potential impact from Delta. Tarps are available at Hall’s Hardware in Milton, Lowe’s in Pace and Gulf Breeze, Ace in Pace and Navarre and Home Depot in Pace
Sand is being replenished throughout the week at the county's regular four locations – residents should provide their own sandbags, shovel and manpower:
  • The corner of Citrus and Leisure streets in Navarre
  • Tiger Point Community Center in Midway/Gulf Breeze
  • Pace Fire Rescue in Pace
  • The corner of Carroll and Pine Forest in Milton
Bags are available for purchase (generally 50 cents each) at:
  • Hall’s Hardware in Milton
  • Ace in Pace and Navarre
  • Lowe’s in Gulf Breeze
Evacuations and Shelters
  • No evacuation orders have been issued at this time. 
  • Know your evacuation zone! Visit and type in your complete street address. If you need assistance, call 850-983-INFO (4636).
  • Have a plan of where you will go - to a shelter, or to stay with friends or family.
  • If you are in the south end, remember Hwy. 87 South is a good alternative to Garcon Point Bridge/Avalon Blvd. for those traveling north. 
  • If there is an evacuation order, residents will be notified through a variety of means of communications including alerts to, a free subscription service for residents which allows subscribers to enter multiple addresses and customize the different types of desired emergency notifications.
  • Alerts will also be sent to cell phones through the FCC's wireless emergency alert (WEA) system and FEMA's integrated public alert and warning system (IPAWS).
  • In addition to the alerts, which are limited in length, Santa Rosa County Public Information also sends more comprehensive news releases to subscribers and media. Visit and click “subscribe to updates" to choose the updates you would like to receive.
  • Residents can also follow Santa Rosa County Emergency Management on Facebook, Nextdoor and Twitter.
  • If there is a call for evacuations or if tropical storm force winds are anticipated, the county will open shelters as needed. Sheltering for special needs and pets will be available.
  • Shelters are not comfortable places. Residents are highly encouraged to shelter with friends or family.

  • Residents are encouraged to top off any supplies that may have been depleted by Hurricane Sally.
  • The first 72 are on you however officials recommend that residents have at least a week's worth of medication and other critical supplies in the event that distribution systems are disrupted.

  • Hurricane Sally left an estimated 900,000 cubic yards of vegetative debris to collect. With 5,000 roads in the county, this is expected to take 90 days. As of Mon., Oct. 5, 102, 690.6 cubic yards has been collected. 
  • Residents who do not want to wait for the contractor to pick up their vegetative debris can take it to the Central Landfill, 6337 Da Lisa Rd. in Milton, at no cost Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Crews have been collecting debris throughout the county sunup to sundown, seven days a week since Sept. 24.
  • It is expected to take a total of five weeks to finish the first pass and there will be multiple passes. Residents will be notified before the final pass so sign up for news updates at
  • Residents are asked to notify the county of any debris blocking drainage infrastructure or roads, through the citizen work request form at

City of Milton
City staff are closely monitoring Hurricane Delta. If the City of Milton is impacted, debris collection may slow. City of Milton residents are encouraged to attempt to secure debris as much as possible if it has not been collected prior to an expected landfall. If you do not wish to wait for the collection of vegetative debris, fees for disposal of vegetative debris only have been waived at the Central Landfill, 6337 Da Lisa Rd. in Milton,  if you can safely transport the material to that location. Please ensure that debris is not covering any stormwater drain or inlet. This could intensify area flooding in the event of a storm.

City of Gulf Breeze
  • The City is closely monitoring the progress of Hurricane Delta to prepare for storm impacts. Check the city’s “heat map” of areas vulnerable to flooding in a significant rain event:
  • Residents in these areas will want to utilize sand bags in serious rain events. Sand is available at Shoreline Park South. Sand bags are available at Gulf Breeze Community Center, 1070 Shoreline Drive.
  • All residents are encouraged to secure homes, make plans for possible evacuation, stock up on supplies and fill up gas tanks. Know your flood zone and if you are in an evacuation zone ( 
  • Where practical, generators and/or bypass pumps will be staged and/or elevated to provide continuous stormwater and sewer lift station operations. The city must evaluate several factors in determining which locations are suitable for mitigation including the risk of flood immersion, probable power loss, safety concerns and other factors. If pre-storm positioning is not feasible, staff will deploy to install portable generators or pumps once a storm passes. Residents should not manipulate or tamper with pumping or power apparatus, generators, lift station alarms, etc. 
  • Due to potential impacts from Tropical Storm Delta, the Debris Contractor is removing debris from larger/arterial streets and picking up large debris piles in an effort to minimize additional damage and provide access for emergency vehicles.
  • Small piles should be placed in brown-lid containers. As city crews work to remove debris piles, “eyes on the inlets” are needed. Residents are urged to check inlets at the edge of property and ensure inlets are cleared of all debris.
  • Do not place non-storm related vegetation or Construction & Demolition Debris in the right of way. Debris removal is a FEMA reimbursed cost; as such, removal of non-storm related debris is not eligible. Placing non-storm debris in the right of way only delays the debris removal process and increases costs.

NAS Whiting Field

NAS Whiting Field’s Commanding officer, Captain Paul Bowdich, has ordered that the base set Condition of Readiness 4 (COR 4) by Oct. 6. COR 4 means that there is potential for a tropical storm or hurricane that may impact the base and area. 

FDLE Pensacola is monitoring the storm and identifying law enforcement assets ahead of Hurricane Delta. Regional FDLE law enforcement coordination teams will be activated Friday.
