Santa Rosa County Celebrates Geography Week with GIS Day Nov. 13

Santa Rosa County will celebrate Geography Week by hosting the 2nd Annual GIS Day on Wed., Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event is open to students, parents and the general public and will be held at the Santa Rosa County Auditorium located at 4530 Spikes Way in Milton. This year's event will highlight the use of geography and geographic information system (GIS) technology by various agencies and institutions throughout northwest Florida.

The following groups will be in attendance to share how their organization has utilized GIS to create efficiencies, analyze data and communicate results:
  • Emerald Coast Utility Authority
  • University of West Florida
  • Florida Department of Environmental Protection
  • Florida Forestry Service
  • Emerald Coast Regional Council
  • Northern Gulf of Mexico Sentinel Site Cooperative
  • Emerald Coast Science Center
  • Navarre Beach Marine Science Center
  • Various Santa Rosa County departments
There will be activities geared towards school-aged children including map scavenger hunt, map making contest, table displays, what/where map contest and door prizes. Demonstrations of the various mapping services provided for citizens will also be available.

Santa Rosa County has utilized GIS to create easily accessible mapping applications and data downloads for the public. Through an online mapping portal, citizens can find county-wide emergency management information, road maps demonstrating where tax dollars are being used, and applications that help locate bike lanes, boat ramps, parks, and libraries throughout the county. GIS technology has also helped several departments, such as public works, building maintenance, mosquito control and parks and recreation go paperless in the field. In the rapidly developing world of technology, GIS is helping Santa Rosa County stay at the cutting edge of local government management.
